Hrant Kalantaryan

I hope to inspire others, just as I was once inspired, and to leave a lasting legacy in the world of art.

"I am Hrant Kalantaryan, born in 1993 in Choratan village in the Tavush region of Armenia. My journey as an artist began... at a young age, deeply influenced by the rich culture and history that surrounded me. I had the privilege of studying at the educational complex of the Mkhitaryan Monastery in Armenia, which laid the foundation for my artistic career. In 2012, I continued my studies at the Mkhitaryan Monastery in Venice, where I further developed my skills and artistic vision.

"Throughout my life, I have been fascinated by the intricate art of carving, and my inspiration comes from one of Armenia's greatest masters, Eduard Ter-Ghazaryan. Known for his microminiature art, Ter-Ghazaryan was a musician and honored artist of Armenia who achieved the unimaginable—carving within the eye of a needle. His extraordinary skill and creativity left a profound impact on me, and I adopted the needle as a carving tool in my own work. With this tool, I have created detailed bas-reliefs that are not only unique but also a tribute to the master who inspired me.

"From 2001 to 2012, I focused on painting, sculpture, and engraving, constantly experimenting with different forms of expression. However, my artistic journey took a new direction in 2014 when I immersed myself in the world of pottery making. The process of working with clay and porcelain allowed me to connect more deeply with Armenian traditions while continuing to push the boundaries of what is possible with my needle carving technique.

"In 2017, I founded my workshop. Through this venture, I have been able to share my passion for Armenian art with the world. My workshop specializes in creating intricate Armenian clay and porcelain ornaments, as well as bas-reliefs, all meticulously crafted by hand. The use of the needle as a carving tool is a signature element of my work, making each piece truly one-of-a-kind.

"Over the years, I have been fortunate to participate in numerous individual and group exhibitions, showcasing my work to both local and international audiences. Each exhibition is an opportunity to share not only my art but also the rich cultural heritage of Armenia. I believe that art has the power to connect people, transcend borders, and preserve the essence of a culture.

"Through my work, I aim to keep the ancient art of Armenian sculpture alive, while also introducing innovative techniques and modern interpretations. Every piece I create carries a story—a reflection of my journey, my inspiration, and my love for my homeland. Whether it’s an intricately carved ornament or a detailed bas-relief, my goal is to evoke emotion and curiosity, inviting others to explore the beauty and depth of Armenian art.

"I continue to evolve as an artist, always seeking new ways to challenge myself and bring fresh ideas to life. My work is a blend of tradition and innovation, honoring the past while looking toward the future. I hope to inspire others, just as I was once inspired, and to leave a lasting legacy in the world of art."
